Battling back

Hawk boys lower back 9 scores at WEC tourney

The effort was consistent but scoring was up and down for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at the War Eagle Conference boys' golf tournament. The 18-hole event was played April 29 at Willow Creek Golf Course in LeMars.

Jack Mastbergen had the best round for H-M-S, finishing with an 18-hole score of 89. He placed 25th overall, just out of the Top 24 to earn points that help determine this season's all-conference players.

Other H-M-S players were Blake Meendering 47-59 106, Aiden Bush 58-49 107, Slayton McCarter 64-47 111, Eli Mastbergen 59-58 117, and Kolby Douma 56-63 119.

"I was pleased with the effort the kids put forth," said Hawk coach Mark Japenga. "Jack shot a 41 on the front and 89 overall; that was a start. We also had kids struggle the first round but then battled back and shot better on the second nine."

Gehlen Catholic won the tournament title with a team score of 319, edging Akron-Westfield by three strokes (322). MMCRU was third at 325, followed by Remsen St. Mary's 340, West Sioux 356, Harris-Lake Park 357, South O'Brien 360, Hinton 369, George-Little Rock 380, H-M-S 413 and Trinity Christian 422.
