Lexi Croatt wins 3000-meter run at War Eagle meet

Crowning a conference champion and scoring more than twice as many points as they did in 2023 were measures of success for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn during the girls' competition at the War Eagle Conference track and field meet.

Lexi Croatt established the lead early in the 3000-meter run and continued to pull away. The senior ran a time of 13:01.59 to finish as conference champion by a margin of over 14 seconds.

The Hawks also competed well in field events on April 29 at Marcus. Eliza Tewes placed third in the discus throw (95'1"). Megan Otto finished fifth in the high jump (4'6") and Alexis Grover was sixth in the shot put (24'8-1/2").

Jocelyn Abonce added a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run (3:02.02).

H-M-S scored team points in two relay events. Otto, Pamela Mutombo, Abonce and Croatt finished fourth in the distance medley (5:19.50), and Payton Diehm, Otto, Kynlee Dolphin and Mutombo placed sixth in the 4x200 (2:08.63).

Additional individual competitors were: 200 – Mutombo, 11th, :30.69; Evelyn Steffen, 19th, :34.37. 400 – Steffen, ninth, 1:16.34. 1500 – Croatt, seventh, 6:13.42. Long jump – Madi Lauer, seventh, 11'7-1/4"; Diehm, eighth, 10'11-1/2". Shot put – Hannah Tessum, eighth, 24'4". Discus – Tessum, 10th, 80'6".

Other relay results include: 4x400 – Steffen, Lauer, Dolphin, Abonce, seventh, 5:21.95. Sprint medley – Diehm, Otto, Mutombo, Abonce, 10th, 2:11.30.

H-M-S scored 25 points and finished ninth out of 11 teams, compared to 10 points and 10th place last year.

Hinton won the team title with 188 points, followed by South O'Brien 65, Remsen St. Mary's 62, George-Little Rock 52, Harris-Lake Park 46, MMCRU 40, Gehlen Catholic 39, Trinity Christian 26, West Sioux 22 and Akron-Westfield 18.

• Big day at Wolverine Relays

The Hawks were back in action on May 2, participating in the Wolverine Relays at Paullina. Three teams were unable to participate due to a scheduling conflict.

Individual event winners were Lexi Croatt in the 1500 (6:17.93); Megan Otto in the high jump (4'7"); and Alexis Grover in the shot put (28'1-3/4").

Additional varsity results were: 100 – Pamela Mutombo, fourth, :15.19; Evelyn Steffen, fifth, :15.46. 200 – Mutombo, third, :31.0; Kynlee Dolphin, seventh, :33.17. 400 – Abonce, third, 1:09.60; Steffen, fourth, 1:15.66. 800 – Croatt, second, 2:58.06; Abonce, third, 3:06.26. 1500 – Clara Funk, third, 8:29.19. 100 hurdles – Jessica Diaz, third, :23.89. Shot put – Hannah Tessum, third, 25'3-1/2". Long jump – Diehm, third, 12'6-1/2"; Madi Lauer, fourth, 11'11".

Relay results for H-M-S were: Sprint medley – Diehm, Otto, Mutombo, Abonce, second, 2:08.60. 4x200 – Diehm, Otto, Lauer, Dolphin, second, 2:14.99. 4x100 – Diehm, Steffen, Otto, Mutombo, third, :59.04.

Team scores were South O'Brien 158, H-M-S 116, George-Little Rock 53 and Trinity Christian 26.
