NCC achieves top rankings for online programs

Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) in Sheldon has secured top positions in three prestigious University HQ rankings for 2024.

NCC is ranked as the fifth-best institution nationally for online Associate Degrees in Business, seventh in the Top 50 Best Online Associate Degrees nationwide, and stands as the leading institution in Iowa across all online college offerings.

Criteria used for these rankings include factors such as admission rates, graduation rates, net price, availability of online programs, retention rates and student-to-faculty ratios, ensuring a thorough evaluation of educational effectiveness.

Drew Prins places at 2024 Iowa SkillsUSA Contest

Fifteen Iowa Lakes Community College students and four Iowa Lakes Career Academy students demonstrated their exceptional skills and expertise at the 2024 Iowa SkillsUSA competition, which was held on April 26 at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Ankeny.

Representing the Boat & Watercraft Technician, Welding Technology, Powersports & Power Equipment Technology, and Construction Technology Management programs, these students showcased their talents by competing against the most talented career and technical education students across Iowa.

During the fiercely-competitive event, eight Iowa Lakes students and two Iowa Lakes Career Academy students earned the prestigious gold medal for first place in their respective categories, securing their positions to compete in the upcoming 2024 National SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta, Ga.

Among the ILCC competitors was Drew Prins, of Sanborn, who participated in the Motorcycle Service Technology (Post-secondary - College) category and placed third.

SkillsUSA is a workplace development organization driven by employer demand to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders and responsible community members by developing interpersonal, workplace and technical skills. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor as being an integral part of career and technical education.

Accepted into pharmacy program at SDSU

Brenton Thomas, of Hartley, was recently selected to enter the Doctor of Pharmacy professional program for the 2024 fall semester at South Dakota State University.

He is the son of Jim and Lori Thomas, and a 2022 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School graduate.

NWI fishing report

Area water temperatures are slowly rising to the mid- to upper-50s. Most area lakes are above crest and should continue to rise with forecast rains. Courtesy docks are in place. The walleye season on the Iowa Great Lakes is open.

East Okoboji Lake: Lake level is five inches above crest.

Black crappie, fair. Bluegill, fair. Yellow perch, fair. Sorting will most likely be needed.

Spirit Lake: Lake level is a couple inches over crest.

Black crappie, good. Anglers are finding quality-size fish. Bluegill, fair. Walleye, good. Anglers are catching quality-size fish. Yellow perch, good. Sorting may be needed.
