Hawks reach full potential at qualifying meet

H-M-S senior Adam Schierholz earns trip to state with win in discus throw

A personal-best effort paid big dividends for Adam Schierholz at the Class 1A state qualifying meet. Competing in the discus throw, he placed first to earn an automatic berth in the state track and field meet.

Entering the competition on May 9 with a seed of 144'1", Schierholz recorded a throw of 158'5", which was 3-1/2 feet longer than the effort of runner-up Mitchell Schnepf. The MMCRU athlete's seed was 167'10".

"We are excited for Adam as he will be competing in Des Moines," said Hawk coach Jay Eilers.

Schierholz will compete for the first time at state in Flight 2 of the 1A discus throw finals. They are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 17 at Drake Stadium.

Although H-M-S only had one athlete advance, several other athletes performed at a high level during the meet at Armstrong.

"I thought our kids did a great job of competing at their full potential. We pushed our kids hard to be at their best and were able to set some new personal records in a tough qualifying meeting," Eilers noted.

Setting PRs were: Graham Lux, 100-meter dash, :12.65, 17th place, and 200-meter dash, :25.47, 12th place; Caleb Grotluschen, 100-meter dash, :12.27, ninth place; and Easton Teal, 1600-meter run, 5:28.06, 10th place.

Team points were awarded for the Top 8 places. Those contributing to H-M-S's team total were: 3200 – George Vargas, third, 11:35.84; Teal, eighth, 12:24.09. Discus – Jacobs Cates, fourth, 134'9". Shot put – Cates, seventh, 42'7-1/2". 1600 – Vargas, eighth, 5:17.85. 400 – Ryan Grotluschen, eighth, :56.65. 4x800 relay – Nathaniel Ball, Carter Dolphin, Damian Dodge, Blaine Finster, fifth, 9:47.91.

Other individual results were: 200 – C. Grotluschen, 11th, :24.99. 400 – Dolphin, 10th, :57.56. 800 – R. Grotluschen, ninth, 2:15.30; Dodge, 19th, 2:31.57. 400 hurdles – Ball, 12th, 1:06.50. Long jump – Dodge, 16th, 14'3-1/2".

The Hawks also competed in two other relays: 4x400 – Lux, Ball, R. Grotluschen, Dolphin, ninth, 3:59.31. Distance medley – C. Grotluschen, Lux, Dodge, Finster, 10th, 4:24.04.

Team point totals were: MMCRU 133, Sibley-Ocheyedan 102, Alta-Aurelia 91, South O'Brien 90.5, George-Little Rock 71, Bishop Garrigan 68, Newell-Fonda 37, North Union 31, H-M-S 30 (ninth), GTRA 27.5, Harris-Lake Park 24, West Bend-Mallard 18 and Storm Lake St. Mary's 6.

"I could not be more proud of our athletes on the year," Eilers said. "It has been an absolute blessing to coach these kids, with great coaches pushing them."

While Schierholz continues his senior season, nine other athletes concluded their high school track and field careers: Jr Araiza, Keven Arambula, Jacob Cates, Aidan Espeland, Cody Glackin, Bryce Ortega, George Vargas, Williams Vasquez and Ethan Wiersma.
