Stiff competition

H-M-S plays with the best at 1A sectional golf meet

Playing with some of the best golfers in northwest Iowa, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn competed in a Class 1A boys' sectional golf meet on May 8. The meet was played at the Otter Valley course south of George.

The Hawks generally had better scores in the second half of the 18-hole tournament. Jack Mastbergen had the best day for H-M-S, shooting 45 out and 44 in for a round of 89.

"We played some stiff competition at sectionals," Hawk coach Mark Japenga acknowledged. "Jack shot pretty well, matching his conference score."

Also playing in the sectional were Blake Meendering 49-47 96, Eli Mastbergen 54-54 108, Kolby Douma 59-54 113, Aiden Bush 56-58 114, and Slayton McCarter 65-56 121.

The best four individual scores were used to determine the team totals. Boyden-Hull won the sectional with an even 300 team total and Gehlen Catholic was runner-up at 331. They qualified to advance to the district meet.

The other competing teams were Harris-Lake Park 347, South O'Brien 354, George-Little Rock 367, Trinity Christian 386 and H-M-S 406.

The Hawks' season ended with the sectional. With no seniors on the squad, H-M-S should have a strong group of returning players for the 2025 season.

"The kids improved in a lot of areas this year and we look forward to continuing to work on our skill sets and be even more competitive next year," Japenga said. "But we need to put in some time on the course to continue the improvement so we can challenge every team we play next year."
