2 from H-M-S advance to girls' regional final
Just as they did for most of the season, two Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn golfers finished near the top of the standings at the Class 1A girls' regional first-round tournament.
Playing at the Aurelia Golf Course on May 10, Kinsey Schirmer finished fourth overall with an 18-hole score of 93 (46-47) and Gracie Knobloch was fifth at 96 (48-48). Both qualified to advance to the regional final on May 15.
"I'm super proud of them both," Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese said. "Kinsey scored her lowest round of the year; great time to put up that kind of score. Gracie continues to play consistent golf, putting herself in contention to be able to move on."
Ava Dolphin was the other player to compete, finishing with a score of 120 (62-58).
"Those were also her best rounds of the year, so I'm very proud of her for her efforts," Kroese said.
Other individuals who advanced to the regional final were Jordyn Sitzmann, Kingsley-Pierson, 78; Avery Westphal, Alta-Aurelia, 85; Maggie Bloom, Alta-Aurelia, 89; Sophie Fedderson, Woodbury Central, and Madisen Fay, GTRA, 99.
Alta-Aurelia won the team title with a score of 385 and Kingsley-Pierson was runner-up at 397. Since the host team finished in the Top 2, third-place MMCRU (425) also qualified to advance. Woodbury Central was fourth (435), GTRA was fifth (439) and Remsen St. Mary's finished sixth (443).
The Top 2 teams and Top 6 individuals (including those tied for sixth) at the regional final will advance to the Class 1A state golf meet, May 23-24, at the American Legion Golf Course at Marshalltown.
