Master Sgt. Lo Henderson served 32 years in military
A decorated military veteran with a service career spanning three decades will address the Memorial Day crowd at Pleasant View Cemetery on May 27.
Master Sgt. Lorenzia (Lo) Henderson, of rural Hartley, served a variety of roles in the Marines and Army prior to his retirement in 2017 after 32 years of military service – 22 years active and 10 years reserve. After enlisting in the Marines in 1978, he traveled the globe on various active-duty assignments and transitioned to leadership positions later on in his career.
Henderson's Marine Corps assignments include: 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, Calif., 1978-79; 3rd Marine Division, Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan, 1979-80; 2nd Marine Division, Camp LeJeune, NC, 1980-85. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1985 and later enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1991.
Henderson's overseas deployments include the 38th parallel demilitarized zone, South Korea; Mediterranean Sea twice; and combat tour, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Al Anbar Province, Iraq, November 2004 to October 2005.
His most recent active-duty assignment was as a Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Army Chief of Chaplains at the Pentagon from 2012-2017. Other assignments include the Army Reserve as a Field Artilleryman in Jefferson City, Mo., from 1991-1994; and 690th Quartermaster Detachment, Evansville, Ind., from 1994-1998. He also served as a recruiter for the U.S. Army Reserve and chaplain assistant.
The list of Henderson's awards and decorations is long and includes the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal, among others.
Henderson lives north of Hartley with his wife, Debra. They have two children, Shayla and Jacobi.
Monday's Memorial Day service at Pleasant View Cemetery kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Seven additions to the Avenue of Flags will be dedicated: Verlus Pippert, Charles Waltz, Don Speck, Everett Lenhart, Robert Reinke, Forrest Knight and Clayton Schuett.
In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Hartley Community Center.
