Hawks suffer 3 losses in baseball action

Scoring runs was a challenge for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball team during action last week.

Playing at Holstein on May 20, the Hawks lost to Ridge View by a score of 12-1. The Raptors scored a run in the first inning, five runs in the second and two in the third. Four more runs completed their victory.

Jacob Cates drove in Jack Mastbergen with a sacrifice fly in the third inning for H-M-S's only run. Mastbergen's double was the only hit of the game. Blake Meendering and Hunter Daggett both walked twice.

Mastbergen was the losing pitcher. He allowed four hits, six runs and three walks. Aiden Bush allowed two runs, and Dominic Tripp gave up four runs and struck out three.

• Big innings by MMCRU

MMCRU took advantage of its scoring opportunities to hand H-M-S a 16-0 loss, on May 22 in Hartley.

The Royals took command with seven runs in the first inning. They scored five runs in the third and wrapped up the scoring with four runs in the fifth.

Bush and Meendering had the only hits for H-M-S.

On the mound, Bush gave up five hits and seven runs, and walked four. Talan Zearing allowed two hits and four runs, and Daggett allowed four hits and five runs.

• Wolves put together 2 big innings

A pair of six-run scoring innings lifted Harris-Lake Park to a 15-3 win over H-M-S, on May 24 in Hartley.

The Wolves' first big inning was the second. They also scored a run in the third inning and two more in the fourth before sealing the win with another six-run inning in the fifth.

The Hawks scored their runs in the fifth inning. Mastbergen, Cates and Daggett each had a run batted in.

Bush and Meendering each had two hits, and Aidan Espeland, Grant Kunzman and Daggett each hit a single.

Tripp pitched 2-1/3 innings and was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs but only two hits, walked four and struck out three. Mastbergen gave up four hits and eight runs, walked three and struck out five.

H-M-S fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in War Eagle Conference play. The Hawks will host Gehlen Catholic on May 31, play at Cherokee on June 1 (10 a.m.) and at Akron-Westfield on June 3, and host Hinton on June 5.
