H-M-S softball team struggles in 2 War Eagle losses

Unable to generate runs or prevent them, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's softball team suffered two War Eagle Conference softball losses last week.

The Hawks began the week with a 7-1 loss to Akron-Westfield on June 3 at Akron. H-M-S scored its run in the third inning and the Westerners responded by scoring six runs. They added their final run in the fifth.

Gracie Knobloch had one hit and one run batted in; Frankie Mohni had a hit and a run scored; and Natalie Daggett, Delaney Murphy and Eliza Tewes each had one hit.

Knobloch pitched the complete game, allowing seven hits, walking three and striking out eight. Only three of Akron-Westfield's runs were earned as the Hawks committed four errors.

Hinton needed just three innings to defeat H-M-S, 19-2, on June 5 in Hartley.

The Blackhawks almost hit through their lineup twice during the second inning, combining seven hits with three hit batters, two errors and two walks to score 12 runs.

Hinton also scored three runs in the first inning and added four in the third to seal the win. The Blackhawks had three doubles and two home runs among their 14 hits.

H-M-S scored both of its runs in the first inning. Kamryn Ebel led off with a bunt single and scored on a triple by Kinsey Schirmer, and Schirmer later scored on a wild pitch.

Ebel and Knobloch both singled in the third inning, but the Hawks failed to score.

Ebel was the losing pitcher. She walked two and struck out two. Only eight of Hinton's runs were earned.

H-M-S (1-6, 0-4) travels to West Sioux (Ireton) on June 14, hosts George-Little Rock on June 18 and plays at Harris-Lake Park on June 19.
