Baseball team remains winless in WEC play
Remsen St. Mary's flexed its offensive muscles in a big way against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on June 10 in Hartley. The No. 4-rated team in Class 1A won the War Eagle Conference baseball game by a score of 21-2.
St. Mary's took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored five runs in the second. The blue-clad Hawks then scored 13 runs in the third to end the game.
H-M-S did not have a hit. Ricky Smith drove in one of H-M-S's runs in the fourth inning.
Grant Kunzman was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and eight runs. Dominic Tripp gave up six hits and six runs, and Hunter Daggett allowed two hits and six runs.
• E-Hawks break open close game
H-M-S was only trailing 2-1 before Emmetsburg exploded for 13 runs to earn a 15-2 win on June 11 in Hartley.
Emmetsburg scored twice in the third inning. After starting the fourth inning by playing "small ball" and taking advantage of H-M-S errors, the E-Hawks culminated it with a three-run double.
Blake Meendering scored H-M-S's run in the third inning on a double by Jacob Cates. Smith drove in Daggett with the final run in the fifth.
Lawton Schiphoff and Smith had two hits, and Kunzman and Meendering had one.
Caden Douma pitched 3-2/3 innings, allowing 14 hits and 15 runs (nine earned). He walked three and struck out three. Riley Wiersma pitched 1-1/3 scoreless innings.
• Early runs lift Jays
Staked to an early lead, Gehlen Catholic rolled to a 12-2 win over H-M-S on June 12 at LeMars.
The Jays scored six runs in the first inning, three in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
H-M-S scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. Daggett's double was the only hit for H-M-S. Aidan Espeland and Daggett each had one RBI.
On the mound, Daggett allowed six runs, one hit and five walks. Schiphoff gave up six hits, six runs and four walks.
• Fast start not enough
In a reversal of previous games, H-M-S took the early lead against West Sioux. However, the Falcons outscored the Hawks the rest of the way to earn a 10-6 win on June 14 at Hawarden.
Five runs in the first inning put H-M-S out in front. West Sioux answered with a run in the first and four runs in the third to tie the score. The Hawks regained the lead with a run in the fourth inning but lost it when the Falcons scored five runs in the sixth.
H-M-S had six hits, including a double and a single by Jack Mastbergen (one run batted in), and singles by Brody Meendering, Espeland, Kunzman (RBI) and Smith (RBI). Cates added two RBI and Talan Zearing had one.
Cates pitched four innings, allowing four hits, five runs and six walks. He also struck out seven. Mastbergen was the losing pitcher. He only gave up one hit and struck out three, but also allowed five runs and hit three batters.
H-M-S fell to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Hawks take on MMCRU at Remsen on June 21, and host South O'Brien on June 24 and Trinity Christian on June 26.
