1999: New apartment complex in Hartley

• June 23, 1949

Hiram Tellinghuisen, of Sioux Falls, S.D., miraculously escaped injury when the Dugan gas transport he was driving left the pavement west of Hartley. The cab of the transport was badly damaged as it plowed into the side of the ditch. Very little gasoline was lost in the accident.

A meeting of World War II veterans who were living on farms and interested in attending an instructional on-the-farm training program was planned at the Hartley High School. It was believed a veterans’ instructor could be employed if enough interest was shown.

• June 27, 1974

Mrs. Elsie Verdoes completed over 46 years of service to Hartley and the surrounding community as owner and operator of her beauty shop. She operated the shop at various locations including her home, until moving to the building on the west side of Central Avenue. Mrs. Verdoes sold her shop to Renee Crist.

Dass True Value was incorporated, with Robert Schmidt joining the firm and becoming a stockholder. The business became known as D&S True Value Hardware. Schmidt had been affiliated with Peoples Natural Gas in Hartley for five years.

The City of Hartley received word that Armour-Greyhound, of Phoenix, Ariz., was willing to have the buildings of the old stockyards demolished. A question regarding ownership of the land in east Hartley would be researched before final disposition of the buildings was determined.

• July 1, 1999

The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Community School was awarded a Success4 Implementation Grant. The $15,000 would be used to train staff and involve the community in the Character Counts program, which was developed by the district’s school counselors.

Open house was held at the Hartland Apartments in east Hartley. Peder Buck, a member of the Hartley Housing and Development Corporation, cut the ribbon. Five of the six elderly apartments were rented, and two of eight apartments in the family complex were also leased.
