H-M-S softball team wins second War Eagle Conference game

Weather-related issues washed out two games early last week and a tournament on Saturday, leaving Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn with one chance to play softball. The Hawks took full advantage of the opportunity, breaking an early deadlock to hand MMCRU an 11-3 loss on June 21 at Remsen.

"The girls played a great game," Hawk coach Stephanie Bronstad said. "They came out strong with the bats and played some good defense."

H-M-S scored twice in the first inning on double by Gracie Knobloch and a single by Kinsey Schirmer. MMCRU tied the score in their half of the first, but the Hawks came right back in the next frame, sending 10 batters to the plate. Kamryn Ebel hit a bases-loaded triple, Eliza Tewes hit a run-scoring single and Schirmer drove in the fifth run with a bunt single.

Knobloch picked up her second RBI with a single in the third inning, and H-M-S took advantage of a hit batter and two errors to score twice in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles in the sixth by Lindsey Van Es and Abby Otto (RBI) gave H-M-S its final run.

MMCRU scored its final run in the fifth inning. The game was stopped in the top of the seventh due to rain and was not completed.

The Hawks finished with 12 hits. Ebel, Knobloch, Otto and Schirmer each had two, and Frankie Mohni hit a double.

Knobloch scattered three hits, walked one and struck out 10 to earn the pitching win.

"Our pitchers need to continue to trust our defense and the girls need to continue to trust themselves as players," Bronstad said.

H-M-S (3-9, 2-5) concludes the regular season against Gehlen Catholic on June 28 in Hartley, and with a doubleheader with George-Little Rock on July 1 at George.
