CC/E Elementary aids flood victims

From clothes to showers, local school offers help to displaced Clay County residents

June's storms opened a tidal wave of support to people affected by flooding in Spencer and Everly.

Officials at Clay Central/Everly orchestrated several outreach efforts in the wake of the disaster, including opening up the locker rooms for displaced people who need a shower. The district's Maverick Missions program also collected clothing for flood victims, which garnered 10 garbage bags full of youth and adult items.

"It still didn't feel like enough," said Iesha Toft, CC/E's Beyond the Bell director. "We wanted to help any way that we possibly could."

Foundation Church in Spencer provided CC/E with towels, toiletry items, snacks and water bottles for people who utilized the school's showers and air conditioning. Okoboji and Spencer schools helped transport people to Royal from shelters in Spencer.

"They were absolutely pivotal in getting people here," Toft said.

CC/E aided more than 100 flood victims last week. Shower services ended Thursday after shelters in Spencer were consolidated; however, the school still said its doors are open to anyone who needs help.

"We will continue to open our doors for those that want a clean shower and need the supplies to do so, or for those that simply just need a moment in the A/C, a snack or to just let their children enjoy board games and cartoons as they watch and take a moment to breathe," Toft said.

Visitors who utilized CC/E's building shared harrowing tales of the flood, but were grateful for the brief respite in Royal. Many also left thank you notes.

"It's beyond comprehension what so many are enduring or have lost," Toft said. "It's devastating. We extend our heartfelt sympathy and deepest prayers to all involved in the flooding tragedies."
