Registration opens for Master Gardener course

Iowa participates in the nationwide Master Gardener program that began over 50 years ago. In exchange for a discounted, college-level horticulture course, participants are asked to do a nominal number of volunteer hours in community gardening projects.

“Iowa State University Extension and Outreach developed its own Master Gardener curriculum with the help of ISU faculty,” said John Buntsma, Sioux County Master Gardener Coordinator. “The course follows a national model that has been tailored to Iowa and uses Iowa experts and expertise to explore horticulture.”

Classes have three components covering 17 areas of interest, ranging from plant propagation to landscape design. The 10-week course includes online presentations from ISU faculty, reading assignments from a comprehensive resource guide and face-to-face sessions.

The northwest Iowa region is planning 10 face-to-face sessions for current Master Gardeners and Master Gardener trainees, although attendance at only four of the sessions is required to meet class requirements.

The Master Gardener course will not answer every yard and garden question that comes up, but it will answer many questions and provide the resources to find answers to additional questions.

Registration for the fall 2024 Master Gardener classes opens on July 12 and runs through Aug. 12. Classes begin Sept. 5.

To learn more or to register, contact your local Extension county office or visit https://www.extension.iastate.edu/mastergardener/become-master-gardener.
