Serving O'Brien & Clay Counties

June M. Luedke, 91, Olathe, Kan.

June Marie (Sampson) Luedke, 91, passed away peacefully and comfortably on June 21, 2024, in Olathe, Kan. She was born in Hartley on Oct. 30, 1932, the eldest of nine children born to Dan and Margaret Sampson. She was raised on a small farm known as "The Ranch" located on the southwest edge of Hartley. She continued to subscribe to The Hartley Sentinel for much of her life.

June married her high school sweetheart, Roger Luedke, in 1950. Together they raised four children: Patty, Jeri, Becky and Tom.

June is remembered for her loving and inspirational devotion to Roger and her family. In February 1959, June's husband Roger was critically injured in an on-the-job vehicle accident and was rendered a quadriplegic. After nearly a year in the hospital, Roger returned to work for International Harvester and continued to work for the company until his retirement in 1987. Harvester also provided June a job at the same facility as Roger.

She retired shortly after Roger, both working over 30 years with Harvester. Roger passed away in 2004 at the age of 72. His longevity was uncommon among quadriplegics and was due exclusively to the loving and meticulous care provided by June.

June enjoyed bowling, working in her garden and spending time with her family. She was an active and faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Olathe, Kan.

June was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Margaret Sampson; her husband, Roger Luedke; her daughter, Jeri Luedke; her granddaughter, Isabella Vilsack; and a brother, Darrell Sampson.

She is survived by daughter Patty Devine, and her husband, Bill, of Cedar Rapids; daughter Becky Luedke, of Olathe, Kan.; son Tom and his wife, Jeannette, of Berryton, Kan.; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four brothers: Garry (Darlene) Sampson, George (Margaret) Sampson, Earl (June) Sampson and Linn (Donna) Sampson; and three sisters: Judy Shumaker, Fran Oleson, and Bette (Gerry) Dawson.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 20, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 60 North Central Ave. in Hartley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley.
