Open house planned for Hartley auto shop

Stan’s Service by SK Repair will hold an open house on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 5-8 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

The shop is located in the former Stan’s Service building on Highway 18 in Hartley. It was purchased by Stephen and Kelly Embrey in April from former owners Stan and Bonny Jacobs, who retired.

Register for Hartley Summer Celebration parade

Businesses and other community organizations wishing to participate in the Hartley Summer Celebration parade on Aug. 3 may register now. The link to the registration form is available on the event’s Facebook page, and the deadline to register is Thursday, Aug. 1.

The parade lineup will start at New Century FS, 520 3rd St. SE, at 9:30 a.m. “It’s kind of a pig deal!” is this year’s theme, and participants are encouraged to go “hog wild” when decorating their floats.

Veterans can join Hartley Summer Celebration parade

Area veterans are invited to walk with the Legion Color Guard or ride in the trailer provided during the Hartley Summer Celebration parade. Those wishing to participate should meet at the back room of the American Legion Building at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3.

H-M-S Class of 2004 to hold reunion Aug. 3

The H-M-S Class of 2004 extends an invitation to all classmates and any teachers to attend the 20-year class reunion. They will meet at the new shelter house at Neebel Park in Hartley on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 6-8 p.m.

There will be food trucks and drinks down at the park. You may bring your own drink or snacks if you wish. No glass drinks, please.

HPL book club to meet July 30

On Tuesday, July 30 from 5-6 p.m., Between the Covers will chat about Agatha Christie’s best-selling murder mystery “And Then There Were None.” Copies can be picked up at the circulation desk.

Musician to play at cemetery chapel

Bonnie Corron will be playing the organ at the chapel in Pleasant View Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 3, starting at 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to hear her play or sing along.

Summer programs offered by OBCC

O’Brien County Conservation is offering several programs and activities this summer for participants of all ages.

Explore the fascinating realm of raptors and discover the art of training a red-tailed hawk with local expert Eric Harold. This program is part of the adult program sessions for the summer. It will be held at Mill Creek Park lodge on Tuesday, July 30, starting at 7 p.m.

Naturalist Lindsey Kleinhesselink will be at the Hartley Public Library at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2.

Adults can also join Kleinhesselink on Wednesday, Aug. 14 for a short educational program while enjoying coffee, treats and conversation. The free program will be held at Mill Creek Park Lodge from 9:30-11 a.m.

O’Brien County Conservation summer camps are continuing, with both morning and afternoon sessions open to youth in grades K-6. Camps are free to attend. The full camp flyer with dates can be found online at https://prairieheritagecenter.org.

Exhibit by Chad Elliot in progress at Arts on Grand

Arts on Grand in Spencer is excited to announce the opening of a new exhibit, “Old Current” by Chad Elliott, which will be on display through Aug. 27.

This exhibit brings the old in with the new in a visionary scene throughout the gallery. In addition, Elliott will perform live music at Arts on Grand at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27. All proceeds will help fund renovation of the third floor apartments at Arts on Grand.

Elliott blends folk roots, swampy blues and soulful writing to deliver an original Americana sound. His live performances have been honed over a decade of being on the road performing more than 200 shows each year. He has penned more than 1,500 songs in his career while also cultivating his skills as a painter, sculptor, illustrator and author.

Elliot served as artist in residence at Arts on Grand from 2005-08, and also created large murals for businesses including Spencer Public Library, Shaky Tree Coffee, Farmers Trust & Savings Bank and Spencer Community Theatre.

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
