HCC annual meeting is Wednesday

The Hartley Community Center Board of Directors will hold its annual meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m., at the community center.

Bison Burger Picnic is Tuesday at PHC

The Little Sioux Valley Conservation Association will hold its annual Bison Burger Picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the Prairie Heritage Center. Featured this year is music by Larry Heschke and other events.

Legion Family membership supper planned Aug. 21

Basics of first aid at Hartley Public Library

O’Brien County Emergency Management will teach about the basics of first aid and CPR at the Hartley Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9-10:30 a.m. This event is free and open to the public.

The Between the Covers Book Club meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 27 will feature a lively discussion of “The Bullet Swallower” by Elizabeth Gonzalez James. They will meet from 5-6 p.m. Copies of the book can be picked up at the library’s circulation desk.

Blood drive is Aug. 21 in Hartley

Help save a life by donating blood during a community drive on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Donors can give blood from 12:30-5:30 p.m. in the social hall of Trinity United Church of Christ, 140 North 5th Avenue East in Hartley.

New donors are especially needed, and walk-ins are accepted. You may also make an appointment to give blood by texting LIFESERVE to 999-777, calling (800) 287-4903 or going online to lifeservebloodcenter.org.

Food distribution at Trinity UCC

The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, Aug. 21, starting at 4 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.

Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

Blood drive in Spencer Aug. 19

LifeServe Blood Center needs both new and regular donors to roll up a sleeve this summer. The next blood drive in Spencer is scheduled from 1-6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at the First Congregational Church, located at 1212 1st Avenue West.

Grant Writing 101 offered Sept. 12 at Cherokee

Representatives of nonprofits, local government, schools and community volunteers are encouraged to register for Grant Writing 101. The workshop will be hosted at the Cherokee County Extension Office, located at 209 Centennial Drive in Cherokee, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12. A light meal will be provided.

Grant Writing 101 is designed for those who are new to the world of grant writing or need a refresher. It will provide a thorough overview of the entire grant writing process, from finding appropriate grant opportunities to submitting successful grant applications.

There is no fee to register or attend the program. Participants can register online at https://go.iastate.edu/E0ATGM or by calling the Cherokee County Extension Office at (712) 225-6196. The deadline to register is Sept. 10 at midnight.

Lindsay Henderson, Extension Community Development Specialist, will present the program. She has extensive experience writing and reviewing grant applications and working with various federal, state, local and private foundation grant programs.

Henderson will assist workshop participants in exploring various public and private funding sources and provide instruction and tips on planning projects and writing successful grant applications.
