• ATV rolls in ditch
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an ATV accident that occurred at 1:20 p.m. on July 30. The report stated that Ella Renae Menhusen, 16, of Sutherland, was operating a 2024 Polaris Ranger 1000 NorthStar Trail westbound on 490th Street when she lost control. The ATV began to skid and left the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled several times before coming to rest on its side. The report states that speed and inexperience appear to be contributing factors in the accident.
Menhusen was taken to Sheldon Sanford Health Center by her mother for treatment of minor/incapacitating injuries. Graci Ann Bruns, 16, of Paullina, was transported by Paullina EMS to Orange City Area Health System with serious/incapacitating injuries.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a piece of the tiling machine being hauled on the trailer was extended too far in the air and made contact with the electrical wire that provides power to the residence at 6176 370th Street.
No injuries were reported. Damage to the electrical pole and wire, owned by MidAmerican Energy, was listed at $2,500.
• Vehicle comes to rest in ditch
A two-vehicle accident occurred on McKinley Avenue at 10:59 a.m. on Aug. 8. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Ford F150 pickup driven by Landan Lee Hanenburg, 15, of Sheldon, was exiting the driveway at 3410 McKinley Avenue and made a right turn to head north. While making the turn, the pickup crossed the centerline partially into the southbound lane. Katherine Christina Vander Naald, 39, of Granville, braked and swerved her 2006 Dodge R15 to avoid colliding with Hanenburg’s pickup. As a result, her vehicle came to rest in the east ditch.
Neither driver was injured. Damage to the Ram was estimated at $1,500. The F150 was not damaged. Hanenburg was cited for Driving in Improper Lane/Wrong Direction.
