A funeral service in memory of Arlo W. Newman was held Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Interment was in Westport Cemetery. Turner Jenness Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Arlo Wayne Newman was born on March 17, 1928 in Comfrey, Minn., to Raymond and Vernetta (Pelley) Newman. He lived on various farms west of Milford. He attended Westport School #5 and graduated from Okoboji Consolidated High School in 1945. During his high school years as a proud Okoboji Oriole, he played basketball and baseball.
He married Betty Hansen, of Terril, on Dec. 27, 1949, and began farming east of Milford. To this union four children were born: Duane, Roger, Donna and Kay. They later divorced.
He married Bonnie Sandersfeld, of Hartley, on Nov. 27, 1974, and helped to raise her children: Cary, Brian and Denise. They lived at Business Corner, Hartley and the Crescent Beach area before divorcing. He then lived in Lake Park.
Besides farming, Arlo worked at Shoppers Supply and Eaton Corporation until retirement. He then worked at Village West, Halbur Lawn Service and as a Walmart greeter until his second retirement. His favorite, by far, was being a farmer.
Arlo served on various boards including the C-D Farm Service and Federal Land Bank boards. He was a 4-H leader and a member of First Lutheran Church of Milford. He played fast-pitch softball and enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx and college basketball. Fudge Stripe cookies and Cheetos were his favorites.
Always loving a good joke, family and friends appreciated his quick wit and sense of humor. He had a strong faith and a sincere appreciation for the nurses and staff at Accura Healthcare of Milford.
Arlo passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024 at Accura Healthcare of Milford, at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane Grant Newman; grandson, Michael Newman; and grandson-in-law, Russell Ramsey.
Left to cherish his memory are sons: Duane (Connie) Newman, of Milford, and Roger (Cheryl) Newman, of Mountain Home, Ark.; daughters: Donna (VerDon) Schmidt, of Everly, and Kay (Todd) Suhr, of Grimes; stepchildren: Cary Sandersfeld, of May City, Brian Sandersfeld, of Montgomery, and Denise Seivert, of Hartley; nine grandchildren: Crystal (Danny Johnson) Ramsey, Darci (Jared) Domerese, Travis Suhr, Nicole (Jess) McCall, Asa Sandersfeld, Ethan Sandersfeld, Justyn (Marissa) Sandersfeld, Brooke (Nathan) Peters and Blake (Kim) Seivert. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and a "special" daughter, Lonna (Brian) Draayer, of Milford; as well as other relatives and friends.
