1949: Work continues on new Moneta school

The Moneta Consolidated School was deep in the process of erecting a new and modern building for additional facilities, necessitated by the growing program of the school. The $45,000 gymnasium annex housed a full-size basketball court, two classrooms and an auditorium stage.
The Hartley Library was notified that the charter expired in 1949, the Articles of Incorporation having been filed for record on Oct. 28, 1899, covering a period of 50 years. The library took immediate steps to renew the charter. The librarian named in the original charter was E.H. Hill.
• Aug. 29, 1974
Workmen started to put in the foundation and footings for Hartley’s new water tower, which was being built south of Spencer Foods, Inc. The foundation was 25-30 feet in diameter and the tank, which was scheduled to be completed in April of 1975, would be 51-1/2 feet in diameter.
The Board of Directors of Community Memorial Hospital announced the gift of $10,000 by the late W.E. Bumann. He had entered into an interest bearing gift agreement with the hospital several years before. Upon his death, the investment became a gift to the hospital.

Two area banks and their branch offices were included in a purchase agreement with a Storm Lake financial corporation. Security State Bank in Lake Park, with an office in Spirit Lake, and Security State Bank in Milford, with an office in Hartley, were being sold to Commercial Financial Corp. The purchaser also owned Commercial Trust & Savings Bank in Storm Lake and Central Trust & Savings Bank in Cherokee. The transfer of ownership was subject to approval by regulatory authorities.
Community Memorial Health Center donated 25 used beds to organizations that could use them to benefit persons in need. Some of the beds were given to the Legion Loan Closet and to area residents. Eighteen of the beds were donated to the Orphan Grain Train. Darrel Duncan and two volunteers associated with the latter organization helped load the beds into a semi-trailer.
