Gift cards spread cheer to Everly flood victims

Library applies for funds to give to residents

Christmas came early last week for Everly residents affected by recent flooding.

Members of the library board handed out gift cards across town to people who experienced water damage in June. The gifts were made possible by disaster recovery grants from the Clay County Community Foundation (CCCF), which has been doling out funds to local non-profit organizations in the wake of the flood.

Everly Public Library Director Christie Seivert applied for money to buy gift cards for Everly residents.

"The gift cards offer flexibility and allow recipients to address their specific needs while providing a small measure of normalcy and respite during a challenging time," she said. "This support will make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by the recent flooding."

In addition to providing immediate relief, Seivert said the gift cards would offer emotional support to flood victims and also bolster the local economy. Special consideration was given to residents with children, the elderly, and individuals with special needs.

The gift cards were distributed on Aug. 28. Seivert was thankful for the CCCF's support and was happy the library could help out in some way.

"We are grateful," she said. "[This grant] provides critical financial relief to those who need it most."

As of last Thursday, the CCCF had distributed $258,700 worth of disaster recovery grants to 21 non-profits and one public entity.
