Faster than before

H-M-S boys run better times at Deb Hankens Invite

Every boys' cross country runner from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn finished with a faster time at this year's Deb Hankens Invitational at Cherokee than they ran a year ago.

Four Hawks finished in the varsity Top 20 during the meet on Aug. 30. Senior Damian Dodge placed 13th (20:03), senior Aiden Bush finished 14th (20:08) and sophomore Easton Teal came in 15th (20:09). Senior Ryan Grotluschen followed two places back in 17th (20:10).

Rounding out the varsity lineup were freshman James Carlin in 28th place (21:33), senior Blaine Finster in 29th (21:35) and junior Carter Dolphin in 41st (24:02).

The five best finishers combined to score 87 points, putting H-M-S right in the middle of the team standings.

Cherokee won the boys' title with 56 points, edging MVAOCOU with 57. Ridge View was third with 64 points, Alta-Aurelia was fifth with 96, Gehlen Catholic was sixth with 157 and South O'Brien rounded out the standings with 172 points.

Junior Simone Dellavedova finished fifth in the boys' JV race (22:58), freshman Karter Zimmer was 13th (24:04) and senior Moises Gonzalez placed 23rd (28:29).

Two H-M-S girls competed in the varsity race. Seniors Kamryn Ebel placed 22nd (24:55) and Gracie Knobloch finished 32nd (30:14). Freshman Brooklyn Erickson, a late addition to the squad, placed 25th in the JV race (31:52).

Cherokee completed the varsity team sweep, nipping Alta-Aurelia (40-41). Ridge View finished third with 60 points, followed by MVAOCOU 107 and Gehlen Catholic 114.

H-M-S competes on Sept. 5 at the Iowa Great Lakes Invitational at the Brooks Golf Club, and on Sept. 10 in a meet hosted by Sibley-Ocheyedan.
