H-M-S finishes in fourth place at Spencer net tourney
After splitting two matches in pool play, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn lost the third-place match during a volleyball tournament at Spencer on Aug. 27.
H-M-S opened pool play with an 18-21, 13-21 loss to Manson Northwest Webster. The Hawks overcame a five-point deficit in the first set to go ahead 17-16 but the Cougars came back to earn the win. H-M-S's fast start in the second set did not last long, and Manson Northwest Webster pulled away to complete the sweep.
The first set of the pool match with Spencer was competitive from start to finish. The Hawks led by five near the end of the set but had to hold off the Tigers to earn the 21-19 win. An 8-1 lead set the tone for the second set, which H-M-S won 21-5.
Manson Northwest Webster, H-M-S and Spencer all had 1-1 records in their pool. The Cougars won the tie-breaker and moved on to the championship match while H-M-S played Okoboji for third place.
The first set was close early but Okoboji put together a scoring run to close out a 21-14 win. Neither team led by more than three points during the second set. A brief run gave the Hawks a 15-12 lead but they eventually fell behind 18-20. H-M-S came back to tie the score at 20-20 but Okoboji went on to win the set, 22-20.
Overall leaders in kills were Kylee Schiphoff with 12, Abby Douma with 11, Moriah Otto with eight, Eliza Tewes with five and Frankie Mohni with four. The Hawks were successful on 100-of-122 attacks. Mohni led H-M-S with 24 set assists.
Lindsey Van Es and Mohni led the defense with 19 and 18 digs, respectively, while Otto had seven and Tewes had five. Schiphoff had one solo block and two assists.
The Hawks recorded 19 ace serves but also committed 19 errors. Top servers were Schiphoff, 25-of-28 with nine aces; Tewes, 20-of-21 with four aces; Mohni, 23-of-28 with five aces; Van Es, 8-of-8; and Otto, 5-of-7.
Algona defeated Manson Northwest Webster to win the tournament and Spencer topped South O'Brien in the fifth-place match.
H-M-S plays at South O'Brien on Sept. 5 and hosts Trinity Christian on Sept. 10.
