H-M-S boys finish third at Iowa Great Lakes Invite
Despite not having a runner finish in the Top 10, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn claimed third place in Class B at the Iowa Great Lakes Invitational. Spirit Lake and Okoboji hosted the meet featuring over 20 teams at Brooks Golf Club on Sept. 5.
H-M-S's seven runners finished within 15 places of each other and clocked times that were within a 2-1/2 minute span.
"It was a beautiful night to run and an awesome event to run in," said Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund. "There were a lot of teams and some really strong runners, but we were able to keep our focus on our race and our pace."
Leading the Hawks were Aiden Bush, 14th, 19:50; Damian Dodge, 17th, 20:16; Ryan Grotluschen, 19th, 20:28; Easton Teal, 22nd, 20:46; and James Carlin, 23rd, 21:07. Also competing were Blaine Finster, 27th, 21:35; and Simone Dellavedova, 30th, 22:11.
"Aiden had a nice run, going sub-20 minutes for the first time this season. James continues to run strong and improves each time out," Hoaglund said. "Damian, Ryan, Easton and Blaine have been really consistent runners for us and running strong times."
As a team, the Hawks scored 84 points. Only Sioux Central (29) and Sibley-Ocheyedan (48) finished ahead of H-M-S in the Class B team standings. Other team scores were MMCRU 102, Emmetsburg 118 and South O'Brien 125.
Two runners from H-M-S competed in the Class B girls' varsity race. Kamryn Ebel placed 12th with a time of 24:39, and Gracie Knobloch came in 26th in 29:36.
"Kamryn and Gracie both shaved off some time from their previous meet and continue to make strides. I was happy with how both were able to finish strong and run confidently," Hoaglund noted.
"I'm really proud of the work our athletes continue to put in and the progress they continue to make," he added.
Brooklyn Erickson finished 75th in the all-class girls' JV race (30:50). Karter Zimmer placed sixth (24:25) and Moises Gonzalez finished ninth (29:57) in the Class B JV boys' race.
In the middle school girls' race, Viviana Delacruz placed ninth with a time of 15:19. Niemi Radtke finished 51st in 21:10.
The Hawks' next meet is at Sioux Central on Sept. 17.
