• Killed in accident southeast of Everly

Douglas Wayne Nielsen, 54, of Everly, was killed in a traffic accident at 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 11. The accident occurred in the 1500 mile of B24/350th Street, southeast of Everly.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Nielsen was eastbound on 350th Street when his 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Amber Lee Champine, 51, of May City. Nielsen was thrown from the motorcycle and then struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Kenneth Paul Ulatowski, 62, of Sheldon, that was westbound.

Champine and Ulatowski were not injured. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Fostoria Fire, Spencer Fire and Spencer Ambulance assisted at the scene.

• Charged with theft

Steven Craig Albert, 53, of Hartley, was arrested on a charge of theft on Sept. 9. He was booked into the O’Brien County Jail and released after posting bond.

The criminal complaint alleges that on Sept. 29, 2023, Albert purchased diesel fuel from Sanborn Propane and Oil in Sheldon and paid for it by check. However, the check was not good and Albert allegedly did not pay for the fuel and did not make an effort to pay in the following months. Albert was sent a certified letter regarding the check on Aug. 15, 2024, but had not paid for the fuel.

Albert was charged with Theft-2nd Degree, a class D felony. His initial court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 17.

• Jailed on drug charges

Carl Leggett, 61, of Spencer, was arrested on a warrant for a mandatory mittimus on Sept. 7. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that when Leggett was taken into custody, he was allegedly in possession of hydrocodone, marijuana and methamphetamine.

He was booked into the county jail and charged with Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine 2nd Offense, Possession of Hydrocone-2nd Offense, Possession of Controlled Substance-Marijuana 2nd Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

• Crashes into another vehicle

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Sept 13. The report stated that Alexis Marie Wunder, 18, of Spencer, was driving a 2008 Ford Fusion eastbound on 320th Street/Highway 18 when a vehicle in front of her stopped. As Wunder stopped her vehicle, a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Ana Oliva Chavez Morales, 15, of Sheldon, was unable to stop and crashed into the back of the Fusion.

Sheldon Ambulance transported Chavez Morales to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries. Wunder was not injured. Damage estimates were $8,000 for the Jetta, and $7,000 for the Fusion. Chavez Morales was cited for No Valid Driver’s License.

• Strikes vehicle on roadway

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that at 9:05 p.m. on Sept. 7, an unoccupied 2011 Chevrolet Colorado was parked on the west shoulder of Vine Avenue, facing north with its hazard lights flashing due to a cow in the roadway.

A 2023 Toyota Corolla driven by Charleen Bartolome, 24, of Storm Lake, which was southbound, struck the Colorado and entered the west ditch.

Sutherland Ambulance transported Bartolome to Cherokee Regional Medical Center with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage estimates were $8,900 for the Corolla and $6,700 for the Colorado. Bartolome was cited for No Valid Driver’s License and No Insurance.

• Fails to stop at intersection

Dale Alan Shriver, 64, of Calumet, was westbound on 400th Street at 6:55 p.m. on Aug. 22, when he failed to stop for a stop sign. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Shriver lost control of his 1998 Cadillac Seville and came to rest in the ditch.

Shriver was not injured. Damage to the Seville was estimated at $1,500.

• Tractor rolls on its side

Blake Burley Jurgensen, 55, of Paullina, was mowing along 500th Street at 3 p.m. on Sept. 9 when the ditch became too steep. The 1983 John Deere 4250 tractor he was operating rolled onto its side.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported Jurgensen suffered possible injuries but was not transported. Damage to the tractor was estimated at $6,000.
