H-M-S runners have good night at S-O Invite

Cross country runners from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn continued to show improvement during the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational, which was held Sept. 10 at Sibley.

Nearly all of the Hawk boys finished in the top half of the field of nearly 100 runners. Aiden Bush placed 27th (19:24) to lead H-M-S. Easton Teal was 34th (19:59) and Ryan Grotluschen finished 41st (20:23). Damian Dodge and James Carlin ran nearly identical times, with Dodge placing 48th (21:02.17) and Carlin finishing 49th (21:02.18). Blaine Finster finished 58th (21:34) and Carter Dolphin came in 84th (23:43).

"Easton Teal had a really nice meet for us, running a personal best. He continues to work hard and he's starting to see some of that hard work pay off," said Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund. "James Carlin continues to impress me. He works tremendously hard but what I'm probably most proud of with him is his mindset and attitude."

H-M-S also finished in the top half of the boys' team standings, scoring 195 points to stand seventh out of 15 teams.

Okoboji won the team title with 33 points, while Sheldon finished second with 62 and the hosts scored 98. Other team results were Western Christian 134, MVAOUCOU 137, Ridge View 163, Akron-Westfield 237, George-Little Rock/Central Lyon and MMCRU 256, Alta-Aurelia 262, Trinity Christian 314, Hinton 323, South O'Brien 352 and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 380.

Kamryn Ebel was H-M-S's top finisher in the girls' varsity race. Her time of 24:27 was good for 22nd place. Gracie Knobloch finished 52nd in a time of 30:25.

"Kamryn continues to get better," Hoaglund said. "She's got great confidence and is running more relaxed each time out, and her times are showing that.

"Overall, I'm proud of how our kids continue to work and the strides we continue to make. It's fun to watch them compete," he added.

Brooklyn Erickson placed 22nd in the girls' JV race (34:34). Competing in the boys' JV race were Karter Zimmer, 34th place (26:10) and Moises Gonzalez, 45th (30:25).

Viviana Delacruz finished sixth in the girls' middle school race (15:27) and Niemi Radtke placed 22nd (21:16).

H-M-S will host its annual cross country meet at Sanborn Golf and Country Club on Sept. 23.
