Parkinson’s Disease Conference Oct. 24 at Milford

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host the 3rd Annual Northwest Iowa Parkinson’s Disease Conference on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Milford. The conference is free to attend, but preregistration is required.

The program is designed to be a day of learning and networking for individuals with Parkinson’s, their care partners, loved ones and anyone with an interest in learning more about the disease.

“Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a type of movement disorder that can affect the ability to perform common daily activities. It is a chronic and progressive disease, meaning that the symptoms become worse over time. Most people who develop the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease do so sometime after the age of 50, but Parkinson’s disease can affect younger persons as well,” said Sue Boettcher, Dickinson and Emmet County Extension Adult Program Coordinator, in a news release.

This year’s program will feature three keynote speakers. Dr. Joanne Hamilton, Ph.D., ABPP, with Advanced Neurobehavioral Health, will discuss “The PD You Don’t See: Cognitive and Non-Motor Symptoms.” Jenna Hardy Pedersen will lead the group in therapeutic music. Kristine Meldrum, B.A., ACE, from Parkinson’s Place Iowa, will speak about “How to Reduce Symptoms Through Exercise.”

In addition to these speakers, a variety of vendors and community resources will be available. Breaks will be taken throughout the afternoon and light refreshments served.

Preregister online at https://go.iastate.edu/AX98PC, or call the Dickinson County Extension office at (712) 336-3488 to register or for more information. Preregistration deadline is Monday, Oct. 21.
