Rodney A. Wohlert, 84, Fort Calhoun, Neb.

Rodney Allan Wohlert, 84, of Fort Calhoun, Neb., passed away Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at the Omaha VA Medical Center.

A funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE in Mason City. Visitation will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Rodney was born Dec. 9, 1939 in Hartley, son of Julius Ernest and Clara Emma (Schierholz) Wohlert. He resided, attended country school and graduated from Hartley High School with the Class of 1958. He enlisted on July 11, 1958 in the United States Marine Corps. After his boot camp in California he was sent to Yokosuka, Japan. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 16, 1959 and returned back to his hometown of Hartley.

He married the love of his life, Sharon Kay Woock, on Oct. 22, 1960 in Sioux City. To this union two daughters were born, Shelia Lynn and Teresa Marie. Rodney and Sharon spent a portion of their life in Cherokee, where they resided for about a dozen years before moving their family to the north central Iowa area, where they had made their home in the town of Garner for around 50 years. Their daughters' families moved Rodney and Sharon to the eastern side of Nebraska when Rodney's wife became ill in 2022. Very serious health issues had prevented Rodney and Sharon from being able to take care of each other in their home at Garner.

Rodney's work ethic during his life included driving truck and delivering pop on a dedicated route, to working at a couple different types of manufacturing facilities and finishing with a position at the sanitation company in Garner, before retiring in May of 1996. He was then able to have more time with his wife Sharon, and of course enjoy time with his daughters, their families and the grandchildren.

Many of Rodney's interests and hobbies included vacations with his wife, family vacations, or the occasional fishing trips with his friends to Canada. He also enjoyed family gatherings, whether it was holidays, birthday parties or celebrations of any time. He looked forward to picnics, whether it was his side of the family or Sharon's, trips to the Iowa State Fair and sporting events. He was a real sports enthusiast, cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes, and enjoyed sharing those moments with his family, neighbors and friends.

Rodney enjoyed listening to country music, playing pool with his friends and family, a good game of catch with the baseball or softball, playing horseshoes, a nice round of golf, and never turned down a chance to sit in the sunshine while Sharon worked in her flower beds and garden. He was an avid fisherman; there was a time his family thought he was going to succeed at trying to catch every single bullhead in the state of Iowa.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 63 years, Sharon; daughters, Shelia (Todd) Briese, of Nebraska City, Neb., and Teresa Gouge (Jon Modderman), of Klemme; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; four brothers, Ronald, Roger, Robert and Roy; six sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Julius and Clara; his wife's parents; two sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law; three nieces and two nephews; and a grandson.
