Five Hawks run season-best times at Sioux Central
Cross country runners from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn successfully navigated the Little Sioux Golf and Country Club at Sioux Rapids, where the Chris Smith Invitational was held on Sept. 17.
Five H-M-S athletes ran season-best times. One was Kamryn Ebel, who placed 21st with a time of 24:20. Gracie Knobloch finished 44th (29:57).
The host school, Sioux Central, and Ridge View were tied at the top of the varsity girls' team standings with 46 points.
Aiden Bush led the H-M-S boys, finishing 34th in a season-best time of 19:00. Also running their best times were Easton Teal, finishing 46th in 19:54, and Ryan Grotluschen, placing 48th in 20:04.
"Ryan and Easton have started to find their groove," said Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund. "They've been practicing really well and continue to push themselves in that regard. It's been really fun to see their growth and I'm excited to see that continue."
Other competitors were Damian Dodge, 50th (20:22); James Carlin, 59th (21:08); Blaine Finster, 70th (21:44); and Carter Dolphin, 84th (24:18).
The Top 3 boys' teams were Spirit Lake with 58 points, Sheldon with 71 and Sibley-Ocheyedan with 131. Then came Sioux Central 132, Manson Northwest Webster 145, East Sac County 171, MVAOCOU 180, Ridge View 188 and Alta-Aurelia 221.
H-M-S finished 10th with 237 points, followed by OABCIG 242, South Central Calhoun 269, South O'Brien 334 and Newell-Fonda 355.
Brooklyn Erickson placed ninth in the girls' JV (31:47). Boys' JV competitors were Karter Zimmer, 32nd (25:47), and Moises Gonzalez, who placed 36th in a season-best time of 27:45.
"I'm happy with how our kids competed. Sioux Rapids is one of the toughest courses we run in our season with the amount of hills it has," Hoaglund noted. "That was a good challenge for us and an opportunity for us to grow not only physically but mentally as well."
Competing in the middle school girls' race were Viviana Delacruz, eighth (18:19), and Nieme Radtke, 55th (26:32).
H-M-S runners will compete on Sept. 26 in a meet hosted by Sioux Center on the Dordt University campus, and at Alta-Aurelia on Sept. 30.
