H-M-S goes 1-2 at home invite, falls to Gehlen Catholic
Slow starts made things challenging for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team in action last week.
The Hawks started slowly at their home tournament on Saturday. Okoboji took advantage in the opening match of pool play to earn the 21-8, 21-16 sweep.
H-M-S reversed the trend against Sioux City West, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the first set en route to a 21-12 win. The Wolverines led early in the second set, but the Hawks outscored them 12-6 down the stretch to close out a 21-11 win.
In the final pool match, Rock Valley overcame H-M-S's lead in the first set to win 21-13. H-M-S led most of the second set to edge past the Rockets, 21-19. The Hawks trailed from the start of the tie breaker and Rock Valley earned the 15-8 win.
The Top 2 teams in Pool A were Rock Valley and Okoboji at 2-1, while H-M-S and West were 1-2. Newell-Fonda and South O'Brien were the top teams in Pool B. Newell-Fonda defeated Rock Valley in the finals to win the championship.
Cumulative stats for H-M-S were as follows.

• Hawks fail to catch Gehlen Catholic
Gehlen Catholic's fast start was too much for H-M-S to overcome in a War Eagle Conference match on Sept. 24 at LeMars. The Jays won 25-13, 25-18 and 28-26.
Serve receive issues hampered H-M-S, especially in the first set.
"Gehlen Catholic did a great job of catching us off guard to start the match with their aggressive serving," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese. "Once we adjusted to that, we were definitely in the match."
The Jays finished the match with more kills (42-27) and attacks (98-79) than H-M-S.
Douma and Schiphoff led H-M-S with eight kills each. Tewes had five kills and Otto had four. Mohni had 23 set assists.
Leaders in digs were Mohni with 10, Van Es with eight, Tewes with seven and Otto with five. Otto also had two solo blocks.
In serving, Tewes was 15-of-15 with an ace, Mohni was 9-of-9, Schiphoff was 11-of-14, Van Es was 6-of-6, Otto was 6-of-8 and Stammer was 3-of-4.
"These ladies battled throughout the night. They were aggressive, communicated well and really put in solid effort," Kroese said. "Sometimes that doesn't show in the outcome of the match as a ball here or there that doesn't roll in your direction changes the outcome. I'm so very proud of this team and know they will continue to work to improve."
The Hawks (5-11, 2-4) play at Harris-Lake Park on Oct. 8.
