Seminar alerts CC/E students of farm safety basics

Representatives from Farm Bureau and Spencer Hospital headed to Clay Central/Everly Elementary last Wednesday for CC/E's Beyond the Bell-sponsored farm safety presentation.

With hands-on learning, captivating visuals and relatable stories, Mavericks learned all about the ins and outs of farm and agriculture safety.

Key takeaways shared with the Mavericks included:

• PTO (power take-off) shafts are dangerous no matter what your age or familiarity with them. Stay away and never walk over them or near them.

• Only sit in a tractor with a cab and extra seat. Cab-less tractors, fender rides, and sitting on laps are not safe.

• Never assume that a tractor driver, truck driver, combine driver or any driver can see you. Most likely they can't and you could easily be run over. Stay safe and stay clear of any farm vehicles.

• Safety comes before fun. It may seem fun to drive a UTV or ATV under the age of 16, but it is not legal and you could easily be severely injured.

• Think before you do. Think about what could happen or will happen to you or others before you do anything.

• Corn and bean-filled wagons and grain bins are not for jumping or climbing into. It takes only 11 seconds to be completely engulfed in corn or beans and only 3-5 minutes to completely suffocate. The average time it takes to save someone from grain engulfment is 3.5 hours.

A grain bin simulator was brought in to show that you have to be able to pull six times the person's body weight stuck in the grain bin in order to get them out – if you can find them in the first place. Mavericks tried to pull the rope and see if they could pull six times their weight. Adults and students alike found that none of them were able to do so, and staying safe and clear of these locations was the best option for all.
