Quick start, strong finish

H-M-S runners compete well at G-LR/CL invite

Good starts and strong finishes contributed to positive results for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners at the George-Little Rock/Central Lyon Invitational. The meet was held Oct. 10 at the Otter Valley course near George.

"I thought we ran decently and competed hard," Hawk coach Naet Hoaglund observed. "Otter Valley is a difficult course and times across the board reflect that."

Kamryn Ebel placed 11th in a time of 25:00.53, while Brooklyn Erickson was 29th (30:25) and Gracie Knobloch was next (30:54).

"I thought Kamryn had a nice first mile and got off to a really good start, which set her up for success later in the race and she closed very strong," Hoaglund said.

Sioux Center won the girls' varsity team title with 20 points, with G-LR/CL second with 65, Okoboji 77 and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 82.

The Top 5 boys' finishers for H-M-S earned medals, and all finished from 20th to 24th place. Their times were: Ryan Grotluschen, 20:54; Easton Teal, 21:01; Damian Dodge, 21:07; James Carlin, 21:08; and Aiden Bush, 21:11.

"There was some distance between them at the second mile marker so to see them close out that third mile fast and together was awesome," Hoaglund said. "I thought Ryan ran a really smooth race. He was consistent throughout the race and finished fast which is what we like to see."

Other competitors were Blaine Finster, 33rd, 23:59; and Carter Dolphin, 36th, 24:39.

Okoboji edged Sioux Center, 31-32, to win the team title and Sibley-Ocheyedan was third with 64 points. H-M-S was fourth with 110, GLR/CL 121 and BH/RV 158.

"I thought our first mile times were really good and that we finished our races solid," Hoaglund noted. "We need to continue emphasizing a strong middle phase of our race and conquering that second mile."

The JV competitors were Karter Zimmer, 26th, 25:16; Moises Gonzales, 33rd, 30:39; and Hayden Dolphin, 36th, 41:26. Viviana Delacruz finished 10th in the middle school girls' race with a time of 16:24, and Nieme Radtke placed 25th (21:06).

MMCRU will host the 2024 War Eagle Conference cross country meet on Oct. 17, starting at 4:30 p.m. at Marcus Golf Club. Defending team champions are H-M-S for the boys and Hinton for the girls.
