Federal, state races highlight local ballot
Anyone hoping to divert their attention from big-ticket races at the federal level on Nov. 5 will find few distractions in O'Brien or Clay counties.
Competitive races at the state or local level are few and far between. With the exception of races for president and U.S. House, voters in O'Brien and Clay counties should be able to breeze right through their ballots next week.
On O'Brien County's ballot, incumbent Iowa House District 5 Rep. Zach Dieken (R-Granville) is facing no-party challenger Michael Schnoes, of Sutherland. In Clay County, there are three people running for two open Freeman Township Trustee spots: Peter Norgaard, Rhonda Smith and Robert Mortenson. Additionally, seven people are vying for four spots on the ISU Ag Extension Council: Clint Hoermann, William Follon, Adam Batschelet, Dirk Benson, Jarrett Smith, Dustin Biedenfeld and Darcie Follon.
There are two public measures on Iowa's ballot as well. Voters will decide on rules regarding the succession of power from governor and lieutenant governor as well as state constitutional requirements regarding voting age. These voting age regulations are already in practice under state law, but would simply be added to the state constitution if voters approve the measure in the general election.
Voters will also decide whether a bevy of judges should be retained.
• ID requirements
Pre-registered voters are required to provide an approved form of identification at the polling place before receiving and casting a regular ballot. Voters who are not pre-registered in their current residential precinct, like voters registering to vote on Election Day and voters changing precincts, must also provide proof of residence. A voter who is unable to provide an approved form of identification (or prove residence, if required) has the following options:
1) may have the voter's identity/residence attested to by another registered voter in the precinct; 2) prove identity and residence using Election Day Registration documents; or 3) cast a provisional ballot and provide proof of identity/residence at the county auditor's office by 12 noon on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024. Election Day Registrant attesters must provide an approved form of identification. For additional information about providing proof of identity and/or residence visit: https://sos.iowa.gov/voterid or phone (888) 767-8683.
Any voter who is physically unable to enter a polling place has the right to vote in the voter's vehicle.
