During Farm Bureau's Farm Safety visit last month, CC/E Elementary students were asked to decorate over 75 "Farmer Fuel Bags." The bags were delivered to local famers to show appreciation and provide a little pick-me-up during their long days of harvest. Students created farm art on every one of the bags, letting recipients know they care. Spencer Chamber and Farm Bureau came together to fill these bags with treats and goodies for local farmers. Students then stopped by local farms and co-ops to hand deliver the bags. Some "farm students" even brought theirs home to give to their parents.
Local burn bans lifted
Burn bans in O'Brien, Clay and Osceola counties were lifted over the past week due to adaquate precipitation. All restrictions on burning have been removed.
Named academic all-district
Football players from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn named academic all-district for the 2024 season are seniors Damion Hansen and Jack Mastbergen, and juniors Isaac Schierholz and Owen Tifft.
Football cheerleaders recognized are senior Lainie Raveling and juniors Jamie Diaz and Jordan Lux.
To qualify, a player or cheerleader must be a junior or a senior and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
NWI fishing report
Water temperatures are dropping quickly. Area buoys have been pulled for the season. The bite for most species has been good. Most fish are moving closer to shore as temperatures drop. Weedlines have been slowly fading back. Most public docks can be fished from.
Additionally, drought conditions have reappeared across much of Iowa, causing river and stream flows to drop to similar levels as in 2023. Heading in to winter, the potential impacts to the fish and other aquatic organisms is concerning Iowa's fisheries experts.
East Okoboji Lake: Lake level is just below crest.
Black crappie, good. Bluegill, good. Many bluegill seen; easily catchable around docks. Largemouth bass, fair. Bass are a ways off shore; you can find some around docks and structure. Yellow perch, good. Many perch seen; sorting most likely needed.
Ingham Lake: Walleye, fair. Morning and afternoon bite is best.
Silver Lake (Dickinson): Lake level is below crest and experiencing a large algae bloom. Walleye, good. Bite hit-or-miss, but very good when bite is on.
Spirit Lake: Black crappie, good. Anglers are finding quality-size crappie up to 14 inches. Bluegill, good. Walleye, good. Evening bite is best with leech and bobber from shore or crankbaits and slip bobbers by boat. Yellow perch, good. Sorting is needed..
West Okoboji Lake: Lake level is below crest. Black crappie, fair. Bluegill, good. Largemouth bass, good. Pumpkinseed, good.
