Representatives from the senator’s office will be available to assist Iowans with problems and questions about issues involving Social Security, veterans’ benefits, military affairs, passports, immigration issues and other federal programs.

“We are cutting the bureaucratic red tape and bringing assistance with federal agencies directly to every county in the state,” Ernst said in a news release. “It’s my job to serve Iowans, and one of the best ways to do that is ensuring they can access the resources they deserve. Don’t hesitate to stop by when members of my staff are in your area.”

Constituents seeking assistance with federal agencies who are unable to attend the traveling office hours can contact one of the senator’s offices directly or submit a casework request online at http://www.Ernst.senate.gov.

Parkinson’s Disease program planned at Spencer

Growing older is the greatest risk factor for acquiring Parkinson’s disease and many people live with symptoms for several years before being diagnosed.

Often people in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease assume their symptoms are part of normal aging or are due to other health problems they may have, such as arthritis. However, early Parkinson’s disease symptoms may not be that apparent and may even come and go. Frequently, it is the spouse or other relatives who first notice slight problems with a loved one’s movements.

To share research and resources about Parkinson’s disease, its effects and possible treatments, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer “A Journey Through Parkinson’s Disease” at 10 a.m. on Mondays, Nov. 11, 18 and 25, at the Clay County Extension Office located at 1515 W. 18th Street in Spencer.

The educational series consists of three, one-hour sessions held once a week, and includes interactive lessons, discussions and activities.

“If you are struggling with Parkinson’s Disease or know someone who is, it is helpful to know where to find support on the journey,” said Michele Hogrefe, Clay County Adult Program Coordinator. “Join us to learn about the causes, symptoms and treatments of Parkinson’s, and to explore therapeutic activities that can be done at home.”

Participation is free and open to the public, but registration is requested to plan for materials and seating. Register online at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/parkinsons or call (712) 262-2264.

Questions can also be directed to Hogrefe at the above number or [email protected].

Year-end BQA trainings offered in northwest Iowa

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host year-end Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification trainings in northwest Iowa.

These trainings feature significant changes in the beef industry and best management practices to provide sustainable, high-quality beef to consumers. New developments such as EID traceability, biosecurity and animal health will be featured.

“Producers and ag-business professionals who attended an in-person training three years ago have been receiving notice from their packer that their certificate is expiring, and they need to recertify,” Iowa State University Extension Beef Specialist Beth Doran said, in a news release. “Most major packers and most local livestock auctions require a feedlot producer to have a current certificate.”

To certify or recertify, producers can attend one of the following in-person trainings. All sessions are free of charge but preregistration is requested four days in advance of the training you plan to attend.

• Tuesday, Nov. 26, 10 a.m.-noon. Cherokee County Extension Office, 209 Centennial Drive, Cherokee. RSVP to (712) 225-6196.

• Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1-3 p.m. O’Brien County Extension Office, 340 2nd Street SE, Primghar. RSVP to (712) 957-5045.

Producers unable to attend an in-person training may complete their training online at https://www.bqa.org/.
