• Five injured in accident near May City

Five persons were taken to area hospitals following an accident near May City at 7:05 a.m. on Oct. 29.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Darwin Van Maasdam, 74, of Ocheyedan, was southbound on Tyler Avenue, northwest of May City. He was driving approximately 35 mph due to heavy fog when he saw a vehicle driven by Jaqueline Barrios Cuadros, 43, of Ocheyedan, going north in the southbound lane. Van Maasdam could not get his 2013 Peterbilt out of the way and struck the 2018 Toyota driven by Barrios Cuadros, which had just pulled out from a driveway.

Two occupants of the Toyota were transported to Osceola Community Hospital by the Sibley Ambulance and three others were transported to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by the Ocheyedan Ambulance. Damage estimates were $10,000 for the Toyota and $3,000 for the Peterbilt. Barrios Cuadros was cited for traveling the wrong way on a highway.

Fire departments from Ocheyedan and May City also assisted at the scene.

• Home in Sanborn heavily damaged by fire

The Sanborn Fire Department responded to a call of a house on fire near the corner of Walker Street and Western Avenue in Sanborn, at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 28.

The south side of the house was on fire when firemen arrived, with the wind blowing flames through the house. Fire departments from Hartley and Sheldon were also called.

According to the report, the fire is believed to have started at the corner of the house on the back deck, where the occupant had been smoking. No one was injured, even though the person living there was asleep when the fire started and there were no smoke alarms.

Damage to the home was extensive.

• Vehicles end up in ditch

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 12:17 p.m. on Oct. 7.

The report stated that Scott Randal Leniger, 59, of Everly, was westbound on 310th Street in a 2000 Ford F250 that was pulling a propane tank. A 2015 Ford F250 driven by Chad Thomas LeClair, 55, of Hartley, was southbound on Warbler Avenue and ran into the side of the Leniger vehicle in the intersection. Both vehicles ended up in the southwest ditch.

According to the report, three of the four entrances into the intersection were uncontrolled, and corn obstructed both drivers’ vision. However, if Leniger had slowed almost to a stop, he would have seen LeClair approaching. At an uncontrolled intersection, the vehicle on the left should yield, but Leniger did not.

Leniger was transported to Spencer Hospital by Primghar Ambulance and LeClair was transported there by Hartley Ambulance. Both had minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage to both pickups was estimated at $10,000.

Leniger was cited for Failure to Yield to Vehicle on Right.
