The Hartley Recreation Board set the hour of 10 p.m. as the curfew at the center for pre-high school age children. The board also named the grades eligible to attend the center on Saturday evenings as sixth, seventh and eighth, and the four years of high school.

The Rivin Brothers Food Market was renamed Thrifty Super Market, according to Gerald Philiph, Hartley manager. All stores owned by the Sioux City-based company were operating under the new name.

The Northwestern Light and Power Co. was granted a renewal of a 25-year franchise during a special election at Moneta. Thirty-six votes were cast, all affirmative.

The seven agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that maintained branches in O’Brien County organized the county USDA council. Hartley men elected officers of the council were Everett Dodge, chairman, and Kenneth Nurse, secretary.

Mrs. Tom (Glenda) Meyer was appointed office manager of the new Home Federal Savings and Loan office in Hartley. She was spending several weeks at the home office in Sioux City becoming familiar with Home Federal’s savings and loan program. The local office was expected to be open on or about Dec. 15.

An advisory council was established at the Hartley junior high. It consisted of a group of parents from the seventh and eighth grades who would meet periodically with teachers and Principal Peder Buck to discuss junior high problems.

Fire departments from Hartley and Royal were among those called to help fight a blaze in the feed mill of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Everly. Cause of the fire was a dirt explosion, possibly ignited by defective wiring. The loss included 200 tons of bulk feed and some bagged feed.

Law enforcement officers from a number of agencies converged on a residence in Hartley. A pickup located there was believed to have been driven by two men accused of robbing a convenience store in Peterson. A search warrant was obtained and a special response team entered the house. The suspects were not there, but a search found the weapon believed to have been used in the robbery. The two suspects were later located at the Spencer Public Library, where they were arrested without resistance.

Because of the close proximity of the residence to the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary School, authorities asked that students be kept inside and away from the south side of the building. Doors of the school were locked until the all-clear was given.
