• Arrested after high-speed chase
The Sheldon Police Department arrested Shawn Rooney, 47, of Sheldon, on Nov. 12 after leading an officer on a high-speed pursuit.
The report stated that the officer attempted to stop Rooney on Monroe Avenue near Northwest Boulevard, as he believed Rooney’s license was revoked, his driving privileges were suspended and he did not have high-risk insurance on file. Rooney fled from the scene, allegedly reaching speeds of 99 mph on a gravel road and driving all over the roadway.
When Rooney stopped at 280th Street, he was told the exit the vehicle but refused. He continued northbound until turning west on 270th Street. While doing so he called 911 and eventually stopped at the intersection with McKinley Avenue. The report stated that Rooney was very agitated and had bloodshot, watery eyes. He refused all field sobriety tests and refused to give a blood specimen when presented with a warrant.
Rooney was charged with eluding at over 25 miles over the speed limit (second or subsequent offense), a class C felony. Misdemeanor charges filed against him include driving while license denied or revoked, operating under the influence, contempt-resisting a court order, driving under suspension, failure to obey a stop sign, careless driving, littering, use of an electronic communication device while driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure of windshield or window requirements, and speeding. He was held in the O’Brien County jail in lieu of a $12,000 cash or surety bond.
• Item on road leads to accident
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that Daniel Wernimont, 55, of Fonda, was eastbound in the 2400 mile of Highway 18 east of Spencer on Oct. 31, when an item fell from his truck. As Rebecca Simons, 20, of Webb, slowed her vehicle, Kevin Origer, 63, of Graettinger, attempted to legally pass Simons. The report stated that the item on the road caused those vehicles to collide.
Wernimont was cited for Spilling Loads on the Roadway and Origer was cited for Failure to Provide Proof of Insurance.
