Volleyball players earn honors from IGCA

Members of the 2024 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball team have received postseason recognition from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Eliza Tewes is a recipient of the 2024 E. Wayne Cooley "You Can" Award. Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese nominated the senior for the award.

"Eliza is an extremely hardworking athlete who is a leader both on and off the court. She puts others before herself and is willing to do what it takes day in and day out to improve her skills," Kroese wrote. "She is a student athlete who always exhibits high character and is a captain of the 2024 volleyball team for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn."

The "You Can" award is given by the ICGA in appreciation of Cooley, the longtime Executive Secretary of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Recipients must show elements of good character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship). Any athlete who influenced their team in a positive manner while demonstrating great character, overcoming great odds or sacrifice is eligible.

• Academic all-state award

The ICGA also recognizes athletes in each sport for their academic accomplishments with the Academic All-State award.

H-M-S volleyball seniors earning that honor are Abigail Douma, Frankie Mohni, Addison Sheeler and Tewes.
