Pioneers split duals with Titans, Tigers

Okoboji/HMS wins home invitational by 3.5 points

The boys' wrestling season for Okoboji/HMS began on Dec. 5 with a split of duals hosted by Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.

Aided by forfeits at four weight classes, the Pioneers defeated GTRA, 52-27. Spencer then used pins in the final two matches to earn a 39-32 win.

H-M-S senior James Gellerman won both matches, pinning Owen DeMoss of GTRA (1:47) and winning a decision over Cohen Roth of Spencer (15-8). Freshman Dallas Greer won two matches by forfeit, and freshman Riley Mattingly lost by fall to Wyatt Haffner of GTRA (0:48) and Tallen Lorenzen of Spencer (0:15).

Overall, Okoboji/HMS was 11-12 in matches wrestled. Chase Franklin, Nathaniel Franklin and Tyce Hanson won both of their matches.

Okoboji/HMS won their boys' invitational on Dec. 7 at Milford, scoring 181 points while Fulda-Murray County Central, Minn. finished with 177.5.

Other teams finishing in the top half of the 11-team field were Sibley-Ocheyedan 147, GTRA 130 and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 122.

James Gellerman was one of three individual champions. He won by fall over Josh Harmon of North Union (0:31) and Gavin Casey of Sioux Central (1:53). In the championship match, the senior defeated Quintin Lewis of FMCC in Sudden Victory 1 (6-3).

Dallas Greer of H-M-S placed fourth at 113 pounds, losing by fall to Aaron Schurman of West Sioux (2:30), winning by fall over Giovanni Garcia of Sioux Central (0:23) and losing again to Schurman by fall (0:48).

Nathan Stofferan placed fourth at 120 pounds. He lost by injury default to teammate Chase Franklin, but then came back to win by fall over Aiden DeBoom of West Sioux (1:46) and lost by decision to Jackson Van Der Sloot of Sibley-Ocheyedan (13-9).

Other champions for the Pioneers were Franklin (120 pounds) and Tyce Hanson (132). Runners-up were Blake Knudtson (106), Wesley Evans (126), and Nathaniel Franklin (175). Finishing fifth were Dillon Wittrock (150) and Alex Rouse (157), and Keyshawn Smith placed sixth (285).

Okoboji/HMS will compete in the Bob Roethler Invite at Emmetsburg on Dec. 14.
