Seven persons, all from Chicago, Ill., were injured in an accident at 11:09 p.m. on Dec. 8.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a witness observed that a vehicle driven by Wuilder A. Montoya, 30, was northbound on Nettle Avenue, failed to stop at the intersection and crossed Highway 10. The 2001 Ford Escape then ran off the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled into a farm field.
The report stated four individuals sustained serious/lift-threatening injuries: Anna Maria Prieto, 39; Jonathan Falcon, 44; Edison Jose Reinosa Pacheco, 33; and Odriana Gonzalez, 24. Those with minor injuries were Victor Herrera, 30; Humberto Guitierez Mora, 30; and Montoya. Falcon, Herrera and Gonzalez were ejected from the vehicle.
Ambulances from Primghar, Granville, Paullina and Orange City transported the injured to hospitals at Sheldon and Orange City.
Damage to the Escape was estimated at $10,000. Montoya was cited for Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device, Failure to Maintain Control, No Valid Driver’s License and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident.
• Icy bridge contributes to accident
Michael Reis, 59, of Hartley, was northbound on Highway 60, approximately three miles north of Sheldon, at 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 when he lost control of his 2011 Ram pickup. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported the pickup lost traction and control on a bridge due to the icy surface. The Ram slid sideways into the median, rolled and landed on its side in the southbound lane.
Sheldon Ambulance transported Reis to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. Damage to the Ram was estimated at $25,000.
• Semi leaves roadway
Stanley Hansen, of Dickens, was driving a 2007 International 8600 semi tractor northbound on 240th Avenue at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 when he failed to negotiate a curve. The semi went off the road and turned over in a ditch.
Hansen was extricated by mechanical means and transported to Spencer Hospital. Spencer Police, Spencer Hospital Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Dickens and Fostoria fire departments, and two towing services assisted at the scene.
• Vehicle flips onto its side
A 15-year-old male from Everly was injured in an accident that occurred at 10 p.m. on Dec. 10. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported the driver lost control of a 2000 Chevrolet S10 on the ice-covered road in the 3500 mile of 250th Avenue. The pickup flipped and came to rest on the driver’s side.
The teen was taken to Spencer Hospital to be checked over. Damage to the S10 was estimated at $5,000. The driver was cited for driving without a valid driver’s license and failure to maintain control.
