First sweep of boys' mat season

Okoboji/HMS improves to 3-1 in dual competition

Okoboji/HMS completed its first varsity dual sweep of the season in boys’ wrestling action Dec. 10 at Sioux Center.

The Pioneers won 12 competitive matches and only lost one during a 63-12 win over LeMars. The dual with Sioux Center was closer, but a run of four straight wins early in the dual led Okoboji/HMS to the 47-36 win.

James Gellerman won both of his matches at 165 pounds, defeating LeMars’ Schroeder by major decision (14-3) and pinning Calvin Nice of Sioux Center (1:00).

Nathan Stofferan (113 pounds) won by fall over Landen Olson of LeMars (1:09) and lost by fall to Bryce Oostenink of Sioux Center (1:58). Victor Rodriguez was pinned by Landon Rozeboom of Sioux Center (1:55).

Overall, seven other Okoboji/HMS wrestlers won two matches: Blake Knudtson (106), Chase Franklin (120), Wesley Evans (126), Tyce Hanson (132), Brennan Baschke (138), Dillon Wittrock (150) and Nathaniel Franklin (175).

The Pioneers conclude their pre-Christmas schedule with duals hosted by Central Lyon/George-Little Rock on Dec. 19 at Rock Rapids.

• More success for JV Pioneers

Okoboji/HMS JV boys’ wrestlers continued their success in dual and tournament action.

During duals hosted by Sioux Center on Dec. 10, three wrestlers from H-M-S defeated opponents from LeMars. Dallas Greer and Emilio Martinez won their matches by fall and Easton Teal won a 6-3 decision. In JV matches against Sioux Center, Austin Greer, Taylor Dykstra and Martinez won by fall, and Braxton Ball, Mykle Meyers and Victor Rodriguez lost by fall.

Competing in a JV tournament hosted by MOC-Floyd Valley on Dec. 9, Dykstra placed first in his weight class, pinning his first opponent and earning an 11-9 decision.

Riley Mattingly, Dallas Greer, Ball, Martinez and Rodriguez all finished second, and Austin Greer placed third.

Overall, Okoboji/HMS had six champions and six runners-up at the tournament.

• JV wrestlers rack up early season wins

Ten of Okoboji/HMS’s 21 wrestlers won their respective weight classes at the Sheldon boys’ junior varsity tournament on Dec. 2.

Three of those first-place finishers were from H-M-S. Braxton Ball (122) and Emilio Martinez (147) claimed titles with two wins by fall, and Mykle Myers (168-177) won his matches by disqualification and by fall.

Other champions for the Pioneers were Wesley Evans (124), Ryder Clark (128-137), Zack Stecker (130-138A), Jesse Hoffman (132-142), Terry Adams (146), Lane Helgesen (155) and Javier Reynosa (263-275).

Six other wrestlers from H-M-S also competed. Taylor Dykstra (130C), Riley Mattingly (195-204) and Victor Rodriguez (275-292A) all placed second, losing one match by fall and winning their second by fall. Third-place finishers were Austin Greer (127-128B), who lost both of his matches by fall, and Dallas Greer (109-111) and Easton Teal (140A), who lost by decision and by major decision.

Other place-finishers were Dalton Vinke (127), John Garcia (130D), Tyler Pyle (155-165) and Cade Dodge (218-223), second; and Jake Pausley (146-156A), fourth.

• Matches at GTRA duals

Okoboji/HMS JV wrestlers, including four from H-M-S, also competed in several extra matches at the duals hosted by GTRA on Dec. 5.

Mykle Meyers won both of his matches by decision, and Braxton Ball, Emilio Martinez and Victor Rodriguez lost their matches by fall.
