• Loses control, crashes into ditch
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Amanda Jean McDonald, 52, of Boyden, was eastbound on 340th Street when she lost control of her 2015 Jeep Compass, which left the roadway to the left and crashed into the north ditch at the intersection with Sorrell Avenue. The accident occurred at 9:21 a.m. on Dec. 16.
McDonald was not injured. A search warrant was obtained and the driver’s urine was sent to the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation lab for toxicology testing.
She was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, Open Container-Driver 21 Years Old and Older, and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability-Accident.
• Vehicle strikes fence
No injuries were reported following an accident that occurred at 5:06 p.m. on Dec. 17.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Fernando Torres Gonzalez, 36, of Storm Lake, was southbound on Vine Avenue when a vehicle in front of him slowed to make a right turn into a driveway. Gonzalez applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid the turning vehicle. As he did so, he lost control of his 2024 Chevrolet Equinox, which left the roadway and struck a fence.
Damage to the Equinox was estimated at $10,000, and damage to the fence owned by Colton Gable, of Hartley, was estimated at $200.
• Collides with semi trailer
An estimated $35,000 in damage resulted from an accident that occurred at 1:18 p.m. on Dec. 18.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Teresa Gail Scheaffer, 79, of Sheldon, was eastbound on 280th Street, stopped at the intersection with Northwest Boulevard and proceeded into the intersection. Her 2019 Jeep Cherokee collided with a semi trailer pulled by a 1996 Freightliner driven by James Lee Gilgen, 50, of Little Rock.
Neither driver was injured. Damage estimates were $25,000 for the Jeep and $10,000 for the trailer owned by D&K Transportation, of Ocheyedan. Scheaffer was cited for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.
