• Arrested by Hartley Police Department
The Hartley Police Department arrested Chad Cookinham, 53, of Milford, on Dec. 16, following an incident in Hartley.
The report stated that during a fight with his juvenile daughter, Cookinham allegedly threw a frying pan at her, forced her to the ground and put her in a headlock. He was attempting to leave the home when police arrived.
Cookinham was charged with Child Endangerment Causing Bodily Injury, a class D felony. He was released from jail the following day after posting bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 6.
• Pleads guilty to dependent adult abuse
Shari Bents, 42, of Rossie, has pleaded guilty to a charge of dependent adult abuse, a class "D' felony, in connection with the alleged theft of coins and jewelry from an elderly person she was caring for.
The thefts of the items with an estimated value of $100,000 took place between Sept. 1 and Oct. 24, 2024, at the victim's home in Storm Lake. Multiple items were also seized following execution of search warrants at properties connected to Bents in Albert City, Peterson and Rossie.
As part of the plea agreement, charges of ongoing criminal conduct and theft were dismissed. Bents is scheduled to be sentenced in Buena Vista County on Feb. 24.
• Juveniles arrested on drug charges
A 16-year-old from Dickens and a 14-year-old from Emmetsburg were arrested in the 2600 mile of Highway 18 in connection with a traffic stop. The Clay County Sheriff's Office reported that a deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and observed tobacco in it. Marijuana and nicotine products were found during a search of the vehicle.
Both occupants were cited into juvenile court for Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana, and were released to the custody of a parent. Each was also cited into magistrate court for possession of tobacco as a minor.
• Trucks collide on Highway 59
Two semis collided shortly after 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 27, in the 2800 mile of Roosevelt Avenue/Highway 59.
The O'Brien County Sheriff's Office reported that a 2020 Freightliner driven by Marcus Jones, 34, of Bellevue, Neb., was southbound and crossed the centerline, colliding with a 2022 Peterbilt driven by Lee Brownmiller, 31, of Ocheyedan. Jones stated his steering wheel locked up, causing his semi to cross the centerline.
Sheldon Ambulance transported Brownmiller to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Jones was not injured. Damage estimates were $120,000 for the Peterbilt and $60,000 for the Freightliner.
Jones was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
