A funeral service in memory of Cary A. Sandersfeld was held Friday, Jan. 10, at the Hartley Funeral Home in Hartley. Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiated.
Pallbearers were Brian Sandersfeld, Kevin Sandersfeld, Asa Sandersfeld, Justyn Sandersfeld, Blake Seivert and Nathan Peters. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Newman, VerDon Schmidt, Todd Suhr, Ethan Sandersfeld, Brooke Peters and the May City Volunteer Fire Department. Interment was in Harrison Township Cemetery at May City. Hartley Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
Cary Arlo Sandersfeld, son of Clarence Arlo and Bonnie Jean (Schmidt) Newman, was born in Sheldon on Dec. 31, 1964. He attended public school in Hartley, graduating from Hartley-Melvin High School with the Class of 1984. During his school years, Cary worked for Bob Fahlenkamp and was active in 4-H, FFA and basketball.
Following high school Cary attended NCC in Sheldon, graduating from the Auto Body program. He then relocated to Mount Pleasant where he worked at a service station as well as at his father’s business, Oakland Auto. For several years he helped his dad rebuild cars before being employed with Lomont Molding.
Cary decided to move back to Northwest Iowa, purchasing the Laura Sandersfeld home in 2006. While living in May City he worked for the Farmers Co-op Society in Sanborn, and then for Sunrise Farms feed mill in Harris until his passing. While living in May City he was an active member of the May City Volunteer Fire Department from 2006 to 2024, when his health declined and he was unable to participate. Cary enjoyed gardening, fishing, concert events with his brothers and sister, and spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Bonnie Newman, of Spencer; brothers: Brian Sandersfeld, of Montgomery; and Kevin (Jessie) Sandersfeld, of Mount Pleasant; sister, Denise Seivert, of Hartley; stepbrothers: Duane (Connie) Newman, of Milford; and Roger (Cheryl) Newman, of Mountain Home, Ark.; stepsisters: Donna (VerDon) Schmidt, of Everly; and Kay (Todd) Suhr, of Grimes; nephews: Asa Sandersfeld, Ethan (Brianne Croninger) Sandersfeld, Justyn (Marissa) Sandersfeld, Blake (Kim) Seivert, Jayden Keck and Travis (Sara Wright) Suhr; nieces: Brooke (Nathan) Peters, Madison Keck, Jordyn Sandersfeld, Crystal (Danny Johnson) Ramsey, Darci (Jared) Domerese and Nicole (Jess) McCall; one aunt, Betty Pahl, of Milford; one uncle, Russ Holst, of May City; and many other relatives and friends.
Cary was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Arlo Sandersfeld; stepmother, Beth Sandersfeld; stepfather, Arlo W. Newman; grandparents: Herman and Hattie Schmidt, Clarence and Helen Sandersfeld, and Ray and Vernetta Newman; brother, Brett Sandersfeld; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cary was a quiet man with a big heart and had an infectious laugh. Although he never had any children, his nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
