Second-half deficit too much to overcome

Mustangs hand H-M-S girls second consecutive loss

George-Little Rock took the lead for good in the second half and withstood a late rally by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to claim a 45-40 win on Jan. 7 at George.

H-M-S trailed from the start of the War Eagle Conference girls' basketball game, but overcame an early five-point deficit to take the lead in the second quarter. The teams traded leads for the rest of the half before a basket by G-LR tied the score at 26-26.

The Mustangs opened the second half with an 8-0 scoring run and led by nine at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded scores for most of the fourth quarter before H-M-S cut the deficit to three in the final minute. A pair of free throws sealed the Mustangs' win.

Scoring for H-M-S included 11 points by Gracie Knobloch, nine by Moriah Otto, eight by Frankie Mohni, seven by Abby Douma, six by Kylee Schiphoff, and two points each by Eliza Tewes and Lindsey Van Es.

Lindsey Haken led G-LR with 27 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals. The Mustangs had an advantage at the free throw line, making 12-of-19 attempts while H-M-S was 4-of-9.

The Hawks were also outrebounded by a 37-25 margin. Otto had eight rebounds, along with three assists; Douma recorded 11 blocks and six rebounds; Schiphoff had four rebounds, three assists and three steals; Tewes had three rebounds; and Knobloch contributed four assists, two rebounds and two steals.

H-M-S (7-4, 3-1) travels to Hinton (2A No. 4) on Jan. 17 and hosts South O'Brien on Jan. 21.
