First loss for Pioneer boys in Siouxland duals

Team finishes 11th overall at Herb Irgens Invitational

The Okoboji/HMS boys' wrestling team suffered its first Siouxland Conference dual loss on Jan. 23 at Orange City.

The Pioneers' dual with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley was competitive. They traded leads and Okoboji/HMS led 27-23 after nine matches. Consecutive wins by fall put the Nighthawks back in front to give them the 41-33 win.

Okoboji/HMS responded with a 48-18 win over MOC-Floyd Valley in the second dual.

H-M-S freshman Emilio Martinez pinned Brayden Oolman of MOC-FV (1:08). Dallas Greer won a match by forfeit and lost by fall to Cole Bomgaars of BH/RV (0:42).

Nathan Stofferan lost his matches to Samuel Quevedo of BH/RV (4:43) and Deiby Felipe of MOC-FV (4-0); and Riley Mattingly lost in Sudden Victory 1 to German Topete of MOC-FV (11-8).

Tyce Hanson, Dillon Wittrock, Tyler Pyle, Nathaniel Franklin and Keyshawn Smith were all 2-0 for Okoboji/HMS, which is 13-4 overall and 4-1 in Siouxland Conference duals.

• Top half finish at OABCIG tourney

Okoboji/HMS participated in the two-day Herb Irgens Invitational hosted by OABCIG, on Jan. 24-25 at Ida Grove.

The Pioneers scored 67 points and finished 11th among 26 competing schools.

Tyce Hanson was runner-up at 132 pounds. Placing seventh were Brennan Baschke at 138 and Nathaniel Franklin at 175. Finishing in eighth place were Dillon Wittrock (150) and Keyshawn Smith (285).

The only wrestler from H-M-S to participate was Nathan Stofferan at 113 pounds. He won by technical fall over Ramsey Fergen of Sergeant Bluff-Luton (16-0/4:41), lost by fall to Bryce Oostenink of Sioux Center (3:31), won by technical fall over Trenton Anderson of West Lyon (15-0/2:00) and lost by fall to Wyatt Blair of Southeast Valley (4:46). Stofferan won the seventh place match by technical fall over Kase Kraft of South Central Calhoun (17-2/4:31).

Gilbertville Don Bosco won the team title with 237 points and Sergeant Bluff-Luton was runner-up with 184.5.

The Siouxland Conference boys' wrestling meet will be held Jan. 30 at Sioux Center. The Pioneers will also host Spirit Lake for a dual on Feb. 6.
