Happy to be home again

Hawks bowl good scores against WS

Both of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn's bowling teams were happy to be back at their home lanes for a meet on Jan. 21. The Hawks hosted West Sioux at Locomotion Lanes and were victorious in the team scoring.

"We worked through some ups and downs and made the necessary adjustments," said Hawk coach Julia Meyer. "We had a good team effort for both boys and girls."

The girls bowled three games as West Sioux only had two bowlers. Final pin totals were H-M-S 2229 and West Sioux 739.

Individual scores were Addison Huffman 143, 145, 111; Kaeley Benson 122, 133, 108; Lillian Van Loon 124, 148, 126; Mason VerHelst 169, 156, 142; Kaidence Shaffer 160, 139, 180; Jordan Lux 161, 212, 113; Stella Anderson 156, 138, 132; and Jeriann Holtz 120, 102, 86.

"The girls are showing improved accuracy in making their spares, but we still continue to work on this during practice," Meyer said.

The Hawk boys started strong despite a few initial miscues. Final scores were H-M-S 3017, West Sioux 2503.

Results for the two individual games were Dawson Niichel 211, 194; Hunter Daggett 204, 169; Eli Mastbergen 276, 201; Graham Lux 203, 228; Jack Mastbergen 187, 180; and Luke Dagel 138, 221. Baker game scores were 208. 175, 160, 190 and 231.

"Each meet helps build confidence and improve their skills, which can make a significant impact when it comes time to qualify in February for state, both girls and boys," Meyer noted.

Scores for the JV boys were Skyler Shaffer 169, 170, 181; Ryan Grotluschen 143, 120, 117; Damian Dodge 227, 170, 192; Braden Niichel 179, 150, 135; Noah Niichel 199, 181, 153; Jackson Brower 133, 155, 189; and Blake Essing 155, 156, 148.

H-M-S bowlers will host Sioux Central on Jan. 31, compete in the LeMars Invitational on Feb. 1 and host Pocahontas Area on Feb. 3.
