Okoboji/HMS girls suffer first dual losses of season
After 11 straight wins, the Okoboji/HMS girls' wrestling team suffered its first dual losses of the season at Orange City on Jan. 23. The Pioneers lost to Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, 48-36, and to MOC-Floyd Valley, 46-30.
Two wrestlers from H-M-S contributed a total of three match wins. Madi Lauer won by disqualification over Daila Quevedo Pech of BH/RV and won by forfeit. Mahkenzie Mattingly won by fall over Mia Darnell of BH/RV (0:29) and lost by technical fall to Kasee Huss of MOC-FV (19-2/2:21).
Kenadie Neavin and Jenessa Gates were 2-0 for the night.
The Pioneers fell to 11-2 overall and 3-2 in Siouxland Conference duals.
• Sixth place at Hinton/SBL tourney
Okoboji/HMS finished sixth in the team standings at the Hinton/Sergeant Bluff-Luton tournament. The Pioneers scored 122 points in the invitational on Jan. 25 at Sioux City.
Brooke Stockdale won the 110-pound title, Alyana Hesse finished third at 130 pounds and Jenessa Gates placed fourth at 170. Other place finishers were Kaela Weston, fifth, (100); Kenadie Neavin (105), Annie Clements
(115) and Brilee Fauth (125), sixth; and Addilyn Plathe (120), eighth.
Mahkenzie Mattingly placed seventh at 155 pounds. She lost by fall to Ava Lake of Hinton/SBL (0:52) and Cyah Mick of Sioux City East (3:41) before winning the seventh-place match by disqualification over Chloe Craig of Hinton/SBL.
Twenty teams participated in the tournament. Those finishing ahead of the Pioneers were Hinton/SBL 235, Ridge View 201, Central Lyon/GLR 149, Missouri Valley 145 and Sioux City North 126.
• State qualifying meet at Sioux Center
Class 1A girls' regional wrestling meets will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, starting at 4 p.m.
Okoboji/HMS will be among 18 schools competing at the regional hosted by Sioux Center. Champions and runners-up in each weight class will advance to the girls' state wrestling meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 6-7 at Coralville.
