Girls split hoop contests with South O'Brien, A-W
No lead was safe through 2-1/2 quarters of the second meeting of the girls' basketball teams from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn and South O'Brien. The Hawks took the lead for good in the third quarter and went on to win, 53-43, on Jan. 21 in Hartley.
H-M-S dominated the first quarter and built an 11-3 lead. South O'Brien rallied in the second quarter to go ahead by four points and H-M-S scored the final seven points of the half to go back in front, 20-18.
The Wolverines took the lead early in the third quarter and extended it to 30-26. H-M-S answered with a 14-1 run to close out the quarter to build a 40-31 advantage. South O'Brien could get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Leading scorers for H-M-S were Kylee Schiphoff with 23 points and Abby Douma with 14. In addition, Moriah Otto and Lindsey Van Es each scored five points, Gracie Knobloch scored four and Frankie Mohni scored two.
Schiphoff also led H-M-S with 10 rebounds; Otto had eight rebounds and three steals; Douma had seven rebounds and five blocks; Knobloch dished out six assists; and Eliza Tewes had three rebounds.
• Fail to keep up with Westerners
Akron-Westfield established an early lead that proved too much for H-M-S to overcome on Jan. 24 at Akron. The Westerners won the War Eagle Conference contest, 62-51.
H-M-S trailed 13-9 after one quarter and 24-19 at half time. Akron-Westfield extended their lead to 44-31 at the end of the third quarter and H-M-S could not narrow the gap.
Moriah Otto scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead H-M-S. Other scoring totals were eight points for Kylee Schiphoff, seven each for Gracie Knobloch and Abby Douma, and three each for Eliza Tewes and Lindsey Van Es.
Douma also had five rebounds and three blocks; Schiphoff had five rebounds and two steals; Knobloch finished with five assists, four rebounds and four steals; Tewes had three rebounds and two assists; and Van Es had three rebounds.
H-M-S (9-7, 3-4) plays at Boyden-Hull on Jan. 30 and hosts Trinity Christian on Jan. 31 and George-Little Rock on Feb. 4.
